Mark Patrick from Baseball This Morning on XM Radio joins the show to talk about his career and life on a satellite.  Well, he’s not actually on the satellite, but his voice is carried by it every day.

We talk about the difference between XM and terrestrial radio and if

the death of newspapers will ever translate to radio.  It’s been widely debated what the role of the internet and new media had on the fall of the printed news, so we talk about if the new media like satellite radio and, ahem, podcasts will ever lead to the demise of the terrestrial radio industry. 

We also chat about his hometown club, the Indianapolis Colts.  I mention Gary Brackett and how I knew him from his days as a Scarlet Knight and Mark tells some very interesting and wonderful stories about Gary’s community service efforts.  We spin that into a conversation about Marvin Harrison, regarding his standing in the community and his perception in the media.  The strange thing is...he doesn’t have one.  Gary is known as a great guy.  There are many players who are known as jerks.  But nobody knows ANYTHING about Marvin Harrison.  It’s not that he’s a nice guy or he’s not.  Really, nobody knows.  But since Harrison’s name has been in the news all off-season here in Philly, I wanted to ask Mark about his perception out in the Midwest.

We then go back to baseball as I ask Mark how he feels hosting a flagship baseball show and if he ever got flack from “baseball insiders.”  It’s been told to me for years that you’re either a baseball guy or your not.  I wondered, and asked, if ‘The Big Chair’ has seen that with both industry insiders and media insiders.  Ultimately (like our podcast has done with bloggers) it’s a lot of work and takes a lot of time to earn their respect. 

We talk about his son’s budding baseball career pitching at Stanford and now on the Cape.  I ask if his son is wowed by some of the names he talks with and ask Mark who he thinks is the biggest name he’s ever interviewed.  He’s interview some big names, so that’s a neat part of the conversation.  Yes, neat.

For you ‘inside radio’ nerds, we talk about the logistics of putting on an XM show, and compare it to the way we do our show.   Mark and Buck Martinez are rarely in the same studio, so we talk about how the show is done, and I ask about their trademark long pauses during interviews.  Someone gets thrown under a bus.

Oh yeah, we talk trade deadline too.   We talk about the budgets teams set up each year and if they factor in room for deadline deals.  We also have a lengthy conversation about the Astros’ curious move of getting Randy Wolf which spins to talk of Ed Wade, Drayton McLane and Pat Gillick.  We finish with who Mark thinks will be the biggest name to be traded.  His answer is both literal and figurative....just think BIGGEST.
