ON THE DL
Ray Didinger Gives the DL a History Lesson
With the NFL season starting, we talk with Hall of Famer Ray Didinger about his career covering the game for more than 40 years.
Ray is an encyclopedia of football knowledge, and not just about the Eagles. The man has lived football his entire life, from covering the game for the Philadelphia Bulletin and Daily News to writing books with Don Shula to working for 12 years at NFL Films.

We talk about his book, One Last Read, and ask him to talk about his favorite piece in the book. He tells a great story about writing and researching the story on Moses Malone, giving great insight into what it’s like to do that feature.

Since the season is starting, we talk a little Birds, including some talk about working with Governor Rendell on the post game show. Honestly, Rendell is the best. He runs a state, and still has time to analyze football games. Well.
Spinning it to this year, we ask Ray to give his thoughts on the Lito Sheppard situation. Is it just a Philly problem, or does this happen everywhere? Ray thinks everywhere, but we talk about how it seems to happen to Andy Reid and Joe Banner all the time.
We end with a simple question...what is Ray’s favorite job, and his favorite moment. He goes back to his roots as a sportswriter, and tells his favorite story about giving the HOF induction speech for Eagles great – and his boyhood hero – Tommy McDonald.
This interview has everything for the Philly Sports nuts and historians. He actually tells a pretty interesting tale about my dad too. It’s like a history lesson from a man who literally wrote much of that history.
