PODCAST: ON THE DL

We start the show with a discussion about the AL MVP award. Well, after a brief comment about how people insist on putting Christmas lights up before Thanksgiving and how I, as a Jew, fear that my death will come from falling off a ladder while putting up Christmas lights in some terrible ironic twist that will end up in, as Nick jokes, the ‘weird news’ reels around the globe. Jew falls to death putting up Christmas lights.

We congratulate Joe Mauer for a runaway win, but wonder how one of the two Yankees didn’t end up with a first-place vote (when Miguel Cabrera did). We’re not suggesting that one of the Yankees deserved the first place vote, we’re just shocked they didn’t get any. Kudos to the voters for picking the right guy.

But boo to the voters, at least 17 of them, for leaving Ben Zobrist off the ballot. Voters can pick 10 spots to pick for MVP...it’s not just a vote of the winner...and SEVENTEEN OF THEM didn’t put Zobrist as one of the ten best players in the American League.

They’re wrong. I wrote more about this at TSB, so read it there.

We also touch on today’s NL MVP vote. Hmm, I wonder who will win.

The Soapbox:

We discuss Fanhouse’s exclusive interview with Charlie Weis. Did you know that people have done irreparable damage to his family? Whodathunk that the head coach at Notre Dame would be under scrutiny for not winning? I guess that 60k a week you’ve been making for the last few years can pay for some good therapy for your wife and kid.

We rant a lot more about this article, but you’ll just have to listen.

Political Safari:

Ari Fleisher has been hired by the BCS to convince America (and college football fans) that the Bowl Championship Series is the best system and that a playoff is the wrong way to go. Yes, the BCS hired a PR firm, -- not just any PR firm -- go convince us they have the best model.

Ten years too late, and even then you were wrong. But it is fascinating that the Playoff PAC has taken their lobby to the government. This really has become more about political back deals than what the public wants or the sport needs. And here I thought the sport wasn’t THAT corrupt.

Housekeeping:

We briefly touch more on Curb’s season finale and tease that we’re going to spoil last Sunday’s Dexter but then decide not to in case you were still listening and hadn’t watched it yet. Please do, and let us know what you think.

Thanks for listening.
