PODCAST: ON THE DL
PODCAST: ON THE DL
We start the show with some talk about Tiger Woods. Everyone is talking about the car accident and the alleged affair he’s having with a Manhattan socialite and how his wife either went nuts and crashed the car with a golf club or was heroic and tried to save his life by smashing the car with a golf club.
The truth is somewhere in there. As two old PR people, Nick and I discuss the spin job on the story and dissect part of the Tiger Woods statement, especially in light of the fact that he’s been stonewalling local police until he’s good and ready.
And why would Tiger Woods get involved with a high-profile mistress, if that is the case? How will this impact the Tiger brand?
The spin really is amazing on this one.
The Weekend that Was:
We lead with talk about Vince Young (despite my attempts to lead with Kenny Britt) and how the reclamation project is something to be happy about for the embattled quarterback. Oh, and for those who think that team can run the table and go 10-6, just remember that they have Indy on the road next week and still have to play San Diego on Christmas night. Those are games a hot team CAN win, but to expect them to is tough. I’d imagine the Titans going 8-8 this season, which is still great from where they were.
We talk about another weekend involving concussions and try to figure out if this is a situation like past injuries where the league is stricken with something that goes from career ending to 18 months to a year to like four games. ACL injuries are still terrible, but not nearly as terrible as they were. Remember stingers and burners? How about the high ankle sprain. They were all, at times, epidemics. Did technology catch up with those injuries to prevent them? Are they more easily treated now? And can the same be done for concussions.
We briefly spin back to the VY story to talk about how someone who was basically out of the league can be back on top of it, and how that story so closely resembles Zack Greinke, who won the Cy Young award this season. It’s good that there are some positive stories that come out of depression and social anxiety.
Inside the Press Box:
We briefly touch on the passing of Mike Penner, who died at 52 of an apparent suicide. Penner famously changed his name in 2007 to Christine Daniels and announced he was a transexual. Now, news of his death. Sad story and our thoughts go out to the family and those in the business who knew him.
Housekeeping:
We talk about Thanksgiving injuries and Christmas light mishaps that almost resulted in stitches. And Nick still hat Rats. Oh, yesterday was his birthday, He looks great for 40.
