PODCAST: ON THE DL
John Gonzalez from the Philadelphia Inquirer joins the show to break down the weekend in college basketball.
Gonzo worked the First and Second Round in Philadelphia so we talk to him about his national TV appearance (behind Jay Bilas and Dick Enberg) on Thursday and how he magically turned into Wilbon on Saturday.
Yes, Wilbon stole Gonzo’s seat for the weekend. We actually talk about the boring nature of the Philly games, and ask what Gonzo’s ability to watch the other games was -- both technologically and from a workload standpoint.
Last week Gonzo crushed the Big Ten, so we give him the opportunity to gloat as the conference only placed two teams in the Sweet 16. We also discuss the idea that one should root for the conference their school is in. Do I root for the BIG EAST just because I went to and worked at a BIG EAST school? Should Gonzo and Nick both be rooting for the A-10?
Gonzo wrote about the lack of beer sales in the Wachovia Center during the games, other than the free alcohol being dispensed in the suites. He explained that advertising on the main scoreboard told people that the bar at the Spectrum was open, which made us wonder if people had to then decide what was more important -- watching the game or drinking liquor? With those games, I’d probably say liquor.
We look forward to the Regionals as Gonzo will be on his way to his old stomping grounds of Boston for the Nova-Duke and Pitt-Xavier games. Is the Nova-Duke game set up to be one of the best of the tournament?
Before we let Gonzo go, we have to ask him about his new best friend Dan Leone. You know Dan Leone, the guy who was fired by the Eagles for writing something on his Facebook page. Well, Gonzo was the guy who wrote the initial story. Are they fast friends? Is Gonzo getting him a seat on press row in Boston? And why did the guy really think that the Eagles would hire him back after he went on a nation-wide media tour talking about how heartless the Eagles were. Fifteen minutes can be awful short, it seems.
The Weekend that Was: Nick and I break down the brackets after the weekend. What did we see that impressed us and scared us (or our brackets, at least). Does anyone stand out or is this as wide open as ever? And is Arizona really a Cinderella, or just a team that underachieved all season?
The Soapbox: Dan rants about teams that wait until 10 seconds are left on the shot clock or game clock (specifically with halftime coming) to run a play. A good college play takes 15 seconds to run, especially if you factor in that even good teams shoot less than 50% from the field so you’d think teams would want to give themselves every opportunity to get a good shot up and potentially grab a rebound.
Nick has a great rant (seriously, great) on the guys who swear they can win you money with their Five Star Triple Diamond Lock of the Week. Yes, the gambling handicapping services that pay for time on local radio stations giving us the best picks out there, and an 800 number to call for more locks. These people should all die...or something like that.
Housekeeping: Look for some changes to the website today. Are you a Friend of the Program? If so, email us. And we tease what’s coming up this week, including the return of Trey Wingo.
