PODCAST: ON THE DL
No Nick today. And no, he’s not ducking you after the Eagles’ loss this weekend. Well, maybe he is. But two guests hosts in his place today!
First, Emil Steiner from Washington Post, editor of their football blog site The League, joins the show to fill in for Nick.
We talk all about the weekend in the NFL – from the snoozer games leading up to the amazing finish to the Packers-Cardinals game. And I still content that the Packers should have gone for two. Not that I would have done that had I been coaching, but THEY should have.
And we debate whether or not to debate the debate about the NFL’s overtime rules. Sure they could go first team to six points (an idea I like) or both teams getting at least one possession before it becomes sudden death (something Emil plugs) but there’s no debate that after yesterday’s outcome, clearly winning the toss doesn’t mean winning the game. So all those who say the rule is terrible need to quit yer bitching.
Oh, and since Emil is a Philly guy, we talk at good length about the Eagles. And no, Donovan McNabb is not going to get traded. At least we don’t think so.
Inside The Press Box:
We briefly touch on the news in the Washington Post that fans are having signs taken away at Wizards games. It’s one thing to take down all Arenas signage in the arena, but the Wizards taking away signs in the stands is close to taking away civil liberties. Now look, this is not Nazi Germany, no matter how many jokes and references we make to it, but holding up a sign of complaint is the most basic form of protest. Why would the Wizards take their lead from the Redskins earlier this season? If you take away fans’ right to protest, the next think they’ll do is stop showing up. At least they came to the building. Let them keep their sign.
Culture Pop:
Simmy Kay joins the show to talk about season two of his MTV comedy/reality program Silent Library. Basically insane things happen to a guy and his friends need to not laugh in order to win money. If they laugh, they lose. It’s based on, as Simmy points out, the concept that restrained laugher is inherently funny.
In other words, watching people want to laugh makes you want to laugh. And this year the situations have gotten ever further out of control. On the first episode, AIRING TONIGHT AT 6:30PM ON MTV, Ron Jeremy appears, and a contestant has to feed him carrots. You read that right.
So check it out if you’re in that MTV demographic, or if you want to relive the idiocy of Jackass now that you’re an adult. Live a little, man!
Simmy and I also talk about the Leno/Conan fallout. Did you know that Carson Daly still has a show? Who knew.
Oh, and Simmy is a Mets fan, so we get his take on Jason Bay. Maybe they won’t finish last this year. Maybe.
Thanks as always for listening.
