PODCAST: ON THE DL

Eamonn Brennan from ESPN’s College Basketball Nation blog joins the show to talk about the current state of the basketball season.

First, we talk a lot about his move from Yahoo to ESPN. There’s always been something cool and counter-culture to the blog world, and even the blogs at Yahoo – a giant corporation in its own right – have maintained that street cred. But ESPN has always been, as Eamonn admits, the sports media equivalent of the jock to the blog world’s punk rockers. Does he hope to change that? Or has it already changed? Have the punk rockers just become trendy indie rock kids now and ESPN’s blog platform is part of this weird middle ground where readers from both mainstream and occult can all enjoy the same content -- like a Green Day concert from the late ‘90s or something.

We talk about the goal of the new blog, but I never get to find out if he’s allowed to boss Andy Katz around or not. Talk about a job with benefits.

We discuss the importance (or lack thereof) of the number 1 ranking and talk a lot about the upper echelon of college basketball. With Kentucky losing, who is the best team RIGHT NOW in America? Is it Kentucky? Is it Kansas? And who will it be at the end of the year -- one of those teams or whoever proves they can get out of the BIG EAST alive?

Did you know that, other than Texas, two schools that have had the best athletic year with football and basketball combined are BYU and Temple? Sure, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin are there too, but we focus on the mid majors (can either BYU or Temple really be considered a mid-major) and talk about how good those teams really are. Of course, they both go and lose last night, so part of our conversation is a bit undercut.

Finally, we talk about the rules for rushing the court and how stupid it is for the SEC to be fining schools if their fans do so. What will the school do, take it out of tuition.

Court Report:

Nick is back and we talk about the fact that CHARLOTTE rushed the court for beating TEMPLE. Embarrassing. So to, if the picture was right and Providence rushed the court for beating UConn, but still, nothing is as bad as rushing the court because you beat 15th ranked Temple. Just a joke.

And speaking of on the court, a fan walked on the court after the Marin Cilic - Andy Murray match at the Aussie and NOBODY STOPPED HIM. How is that still possible?

Football Talk:

Nick and I talk about the Pro Bowl and how backwards it is that players in the Super Bowl have to take part in Pro Bowl events but those who lost in the playoffs -- TOM BRADY, et al -- can beg off on the whole week. That’s not fair.

Housekeeping:

We talk SOTU and somehow equate it to both the Simpsons, and my friend Bill’s wedding. Good times.

Thanks to Eamonn and you for listening, as always.
