PODCAST: ON THE DL
PODCAST: ON THE DL
We throw a lot at you on this show. First, Will Carroll from Baseball Prospectus joins the show to talk about, what else, FOOTBALL!
Carroll is an Indianapolis guy, so I wanted to get his take on the scene in Indy. Is it the euphoria like in New Orleans or more of a “been there done that” after winning a Super Bowl not too long ago?
We discuss the depth of the Colts and how losing Dwight Freeney may not be that big a deal. Oh, and we talk about Freeney’s ankle in a conversation that may or may not make sense after reports that he might have torn ligaments and not just a sprain.
But, it wouldn’t be right to have Carroll on and not talk a little baseball. We discuss the PECOTA rankings and try to figure out if throwing a dart against a wall is more or less accurate than their division winners. Note, I will not be betting any houses against the Yankees making the playoffs.
We also talk about the state of the labor unions in the major sports. Could we see a 2011 without any professional sports? Not likely, but it is, in a way, possible.
Soccer Talk:
Well, this is more about infidelity and abortion and media injunctions than soccer. Yes, we tackle the John Terry situation.
Print’s Not Dead:
Rex Ryan flipped a guy off at an MMA event. The media went nuts. NY Post has a middle finger photo on the front page. Bob Glauber actually wrote this:
“He shouldn’t have done it. As a public figure, he needs to control his emotions and not engage in the kind of behavior that will embarrass him, the Jets’ organization and the NFL at large.
“He wouldn’t expect that behavior from his players, nor should they expect it of him. He’s looked up to by fans, many of whom are young and impressionable, and he needs to maintain a sense of decorum both on and off the field.
“Goodell should absolutely fine Ryan, and the Jets should levy an additional sanction.”
FINED AND SANCTIONED? For flipping a guy off at an MMA event? I said on the show that the only reason someone at an MMA event should be upset that a guy flipped the bird is if the finger was blocking the view of an ear dangling from someone’s face. This is ridiculous, and yes, I understand the irony of me getting overly angry about the media getting overly angry.
Housekeeping:
Kornheiser said in September that Federer was done. Oops. And, not discussed on the show but we will tomorrow, RIP to Tom Brookshier.
